Automatic, is buying Tumblr
Automatic, which also owns WP and its CEO is Matt Mullenweg, is now buying Tumblr for an undisclosed amount.

A figure believed to be below $10 million…

…for 450 million blogs – and still a fair amount of activity (although it’s waned a lot in last couple of years).

Seems like quite a good deal to me. WordPress has pretty much reached saturation point I think, so meaningful growth will need to come from acquisitions now.

Verizon had no clue what to do with it, and then they removed all the porn. Cue mass user exodus.

Yahoo before didn’t really know either. At least they didn’t interfere too hard.

And used a rather broad definition of the term in doing so – Japanese 17th/18th century erotic prints ?

Re: Automatic, is buying Tumblr
AT&T—now the parent company of WarnerMedia and its divisions, including DC Comics (previously known as DC Entertainment), HBO, Turner, and Warner Bros.—does not seem terribly interested in being in the comic book publishing business. It’s telling that in a long profile of AT&T CEO John Stankey this morning in Variety, DC was one of the only WarnerMedia brands that was not mentioned. To the extent that DC matters at all in the company’s future, it’s as a source of owned IP for other media channels and as a lifestyle brand to serve as an ambassador to geek culture. – Where Does DC Comics Fit In AT&T’s Vision For WarnerMedia?
It will be interesting what AT&T decides to keep and what they decide to unload at firesale prices.

Matt Mullenweg’s Plan for Tumblr
- Move infrastructure off Verizon.
- Support same APIs on both WP.com and Tumblr.
- Switch backend to be WP.
- Open source Tumblr.com client similar to Calypso.

and his Tumblr post on buying Tumblr: Automattic + Tumblr

I’m most interested in how they’re going to migrate >1 trillion objects out of Verizon, and also very interested in how we can perhaps take inspiration from the Calypso-ified Tumblr interface, and port some elements to be Textpattern theme-flavoured.
PS: I heard three million USD mentioned as a sale price, which is about 99% less than it was bought for two years ago. Amazing.
