category alias?

I’m probably out of luck here—I’ve looked through the plugins listed in this forum, and haven’t found what I’m looking for. But just in case… ;)

I’m currently setting up a Japanese language site. Since they can be passed through the URL, all of the section and category names are being created using ASCII characters, but I’d like to be able to display Japanese character aliases on the page templates.

I’ve found the spc_section_alias plugin, which accomplishes this for section names (i.e., < txp:spc_section_alias section=“diary” title=”[

Re: category alias?

I’m looking for the same thing – be able to set aliases to categories. My problem is that if I write the category name in Bulgarian, then the URL gets messed up.

Re: category alias?

In the new year, I’m going to look into the possibility of hacking the spc_section_alias plugin to work with category names.

I don’t actually know the first thing about writing plugins for txp, so no gauruntee as to when it will be available, but I’ll let you know how it goes!

Re: category alias?

Hi! I’ve been pretty busy lately, so I’ve not had a chance to hang around the forums. I apologize. Anyway, I thought about doing this a while back, but I never figured out what value it would add. Now that you all mention it, international characters would be a good reason to write a category alias plugin. The concept of spc_section_alias could easily be expanded to categories.

So here’s a conversation starter. What should this plugin do? Just alias categories? Iterate them? How should it handle multiple categories? Should it be part of section_alias or separate from it?

Re: category alias?

Hi spchampion!

scp_section_alias is a fantastic plugin, by the way! I can’t imagine living without it now (even for my English txp sites :)

My thoughts, in random order…

Personally, I’d be happy to see category aliasing as part of section_alias. However, since categories and sections are two very different things in TXP semantics, I suspect it would probably be more “logical” to make category aliasing a seperate plugin

Being able to iterate through categories would be wonderful.

Multiple categories…. good question. As I don’t usually use multiple categories, I haven’t given much thought as to how that might work :(

I would love to be able to define a title links (one of those little details which made scp_section so nice)

Thanks so much! I’m very excited about the possiblity of this plugin =D

Re: category alias?

I’d go for a separate plugin, not everyone will need both. Also, I’d duplicate the functionality of the scp_section_alias, as much as possible. This will make it more accessible and easy to understand by people already using the other plugin.

Category iteration means nothing to me at this point. Also, I don’t see what multicategories has to do with the plugin. Those two are a direct result of me not using TXP to it’s full power…

Re: category alias?

As a Greek user I’ve come up with pretty much the same problems Boby has described. Therefore, I’ve pointed the need of URL-only category & section names and filed it under “Localisation”.

Re: category alias?

The trouble with non ascii categories is that URL are in ascii, not matter what. That can be emulated, like in Wikipedia, but I’m not sure that would be good for TXP.

But for the HTML display, I agree non ascii sections and categories are a must have, quite a basic feature in fact.

I believe – hope – that TXP 1.0 may somewhat adress that by allowing webmasters to strip categories from the URL in clean mode, and so allowing for direct UTF8 use.

Re: category alias?

The Greek, Russian, Japanese etc. Wikipedia URLs are what I don’t want my URLs to look like.
