rvm_maintenance – displays the error_503 page template to anyone not logged in while the plugin is active.

rvm_privileged

Re: take site offline

What hidalgo suggest: rvm_maintenance. Works great, and friendly to search engines. I use it every time I do a major Textpattern update.

Re: take site offline

I guess t depends what kind of an update one needs. Sometimes it is just about mostly changing the css for which case rvm_privileged is great as the site still functions as expected for its visitors.

Oh, sure, for minor surgery or other changes, that is certainly useful. But from what bici asked, I think we’re talking about major surgery / repair / rebuild.

Re: take site offline

rvm_maintenance goes into every Txp site I setup. One of the few ‘automatics’ I add.

Careful, it’s addicting. (wion.com has been in perpetual rvm_maintenance mode for a few years now.) Hehe.

Re: take site offline

Just a FYI, use Ruud’s plugin in almost all instances because it’s brilliant. But if you want a bit more of a visual nod on the admin side or wish to write some public side code to toggle it on or off (without using rvm_privileged alongside) then try smd_at_work.

It’s virtually identical to rvm_maintenance, except:

  • You toggle the status from a message that is permanently displayed on the admin side (bottom right of the screen). A handy visual reminder that it’s on, because you’re often logged in and therefore always see the site in its working state and may forget to turn maintenance mode off.
  • It works in plugin cache scenarios. Ruud’s won’t work if you load plugins from disk or roll your own version control because it would be “always active”, i.e. permanent 503. Since smd_at_work is toggled from the aforementioned link, it works in either setup.
  • It has two public tags allowing you to check/toggle the status. Privileged users can then see the status on the public site, and optionally toggle it from there if you wish. Up to you how you use the tags.

The smd plugin menagerie — for when you need one more gribble of power from Textpattern. Bleeding-edge code available on GitHub.

Re: take site offline

Nice! Men_at_work! I like the message it provides as a reminder: Website is in Maintenance Mode

Something along these lines should be added to Core. Meaningful labor

Re: take site offline

Follow up. On 2 of the 3 Admin-Side-Themes the placement of the string “Website is in Maintenance Mode” is wrong. it doesn’t work. Only on the Classic themes is it well placed and doesn’t interfere with the other text.

Any chance it can be placed above this line

Textpattern CMS (opens an external link in a new window) (4.6.2) · Logged in as NAME · Log out

in a larger font?

Edit: Replaced login name.
