Textpattern pub meet: St Austell, Cornwall, UK - May 25, '15

This is about as last minute as it gets, but here goes.

There’s a 100% unofficial Textpattern meet at a pub in St Austell, Cornwall, UK tonight. There will be beer available, some food if you’re hungry and at least three Textpattern users from the current era and times past.

Yeah, bank holiday, half term holidays, and it’s literally reached three attendees this morning. Sorry about all of that.

Where: The Carclaze, St Austell, Cornwall, UK
When: Monday, May 25th 2015 from 6pm-ish
Why: ‘cos Stef’s down here on vacation and I owe him a beer or two

Who: Stef (bloke), Ross (algaris) and Pete (gaekwad) so far.

On a related note, we should have a Textpattern UK get-together at some point – perhaps in the Bar Camp/unconference style. Thoughts about that appreciated.

Sorry about that, I booked those seats for friends who were coming to my cat’s birthday party.

gaekwad, thanks for buying Bloke a beer or two. For the help he’s provided over the years on here, I probably owe him a keg.

And jolly nice it was too. Many thanks to Pete and Ross for taking the time out of their busy lives to brave the narrow Cornish roads. It was wonderful to put faces to the avatars and have a good chit-chat about tech, art, and Textpattern, among other things.

Would love to meet up with more people, so a more formalised setting, properly planned, gets my vote. Must crack on with shaping up a release to justify everything…

One of the (many) things that Ross, Stef and I talked about was a UK meet in Bristol. Primary reasons behind this:

  • it’s well-served by road – M4, M5, etc
  • it’s well-served by air – BRS is an Easyjet hub, so mainland Europe is not far away
  • it has previous form as a Textpattern meeting spot

I looked at all that, and Weston-super-Mare looks like it could be a good spot, and accommodation is well-priced after the summer rush – 35GBP for a Premier Inn room in September. It’s not far from BRS, and easily accessed from the M5.

I’ll be honest, as I always try to be: I left the hastily-arranged meet with Ross and Stef somewhat frustrated. Not through any fault of theirs, I must stress, more with the realisation that Textpattern is a tricky project which needs lots of patience and understanding. I know I can do more to contribute, and level the balance with what I get out of it, but I’ll admit that timescales slide on my end with lack of cohesion and motivation. I’m sure I’m not the only person to think this.

With that, I propose a more formalised Textpattern user group meet in autumn – by the sea, in Weston-super-Mare, Bristol, UK. If there’s enough interest (say, half a dozen people or more), I’ll spawn a new thread and we can start bashing out some details.

Fantastic! Assuming that Pete goes to his own party, my presence will make two people. That’s a third of the minimum quorate already…

I’d would be interested in Bristol meetup if it is nearer the start of September – as I’m on vacation overseas from 19th September.
