Upgrading from 4.0.6 and in Trouble!

Hey folks. I have an old site that I built but haven’t maintained in a while. The site is running TXP 4.0.6 on PHP 4.

My host is upgrading to PHP 5+ and I figure it’s time to update TXP 4.4.1.

Anyway, I am trying to work this out locally using MAMP first.

Problem is if I copy my old .htaccess file and load the site the browser just downloads an empty file. If I delete it I get my TXP site but tons of errors.

Is my database trashed?

Is there a better way to go about the process of upgrading a really old version?

Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks.
