Using TP as alternative for Onenote, looking for Plugins
Hi.
I am trying to implement TP for our website to replace the now used Microsoft Onenote.
We are using Onenote for sharing ideas, meetings etc.
Can you tell me, if TP is capable of doing that?
I am looking for plugins with the following:
1) Everybody can edit and create an Article. (TP would be internal)
2) An Article can be locked, so when editing, no info gets lost, when there is another user editing.
Can you tell me if there are plugins for that?

Hi and welcome to txp
your first point is possible (you’ll just need to create the users and possibly alter their permissions using one of the bot_ plugins)
I seem to remember a plugin which could help you with your second request but I just can’t remember who created it or its name

1) is possible out of the box – you just create additional users. It is possible to assign different rights, so that some authors can only contribute but not publish, while other users have editing and publishing rights.
2) I know of no plugin at the moment that locks an article – though it’s conceivable that someone may be able to write that.
You may find, however, that one of the many collaborative platforms out there may be more suited to your needs, especially if you are writing collaboratively. Tools like writeboard (now only available as part of basecamp) or one of the etherpad clones are ways of ensuring that no information gets lost and changes by multiple authors – who can even work at the same time – can be tracked.

colak and jakob are both right in their opinions, I think: There’s no plugin that locks articles but there’s one that comes close to that in giving a warning. ATM nok_edit_alarm can be found here. For a short brief see the quote from its help above the plugin’s code. In case you really want to realize your project with TXP there’s a fix for installing the plugin’s database table in the post below.

Thank you for the replies :)
For etherpad: Apparently it requires a Linux machine.
We only have a webserver + MYSQL. That means, I can run something like Textpattern or a wiki like mediawiki, but no etherpad.
Perhaps TP is not the right thing for me, does anybody have another suggestion?

I’ve only had a passing play with it – and so I’m not sure how well you can separate the “teamwork face” and “public face” – but maybe Open Atrium is worth further investigation. To quote it’s front page, there is a “Notebook: Collaborate on documents, compare revisions, and print when you’re done.” It’s open-source and built on top of Drupal so has similar server requirements to TXP. It comes with multi-user functionality and a whole host of other collaboration-oriented functionality.

Another (perhaps ugly) alternative is Google Docs. You can invite users, or groups of users, to work on a document and multiple people can work on the document in real-time, concurrently. You see all the edits live, and changes are tracked, plus you get commenting and a chat window on the side. So, while you can’t “lock” a document that’s being edited, you can see who’s working on what and avoid that part of the document.
I’m not exactly advocating it, because I really can’t stand GoogleDocs (this cloud crap is too slow for my liking) but I think it ticks all your boxes so might be worth investigating.

unfortunately, GDocs is not an option. Google is spying and locking documents without warning.
