Textpattern and PHP 5.3

It seems that Textpattern and PHP 5.3 are not living well together. I’m on a new VPS running under 5.3. I get plenty of this kind of errors:
Warning: getdate() [function.getdate]: It is not safe to rely on the system’s timezone settings. You are required to use the date.timezone setting or the date_default_timezone_set() function. In case you used any of those methods and you are still getting this warning, you most likely misspelled the timezone identifier. We selected ‘America/New_York’ for ‘EST/-5,0/no DST’ instead in /var/www/vhosts/guyverville.com/httpdocs/textpattern/lib/txplib_misc.php on line 1338

Try to set your timezone by modifying php.ini if you can. Background info.
