Renaming the textpattern directory

Is it practical to rename the textpattern directory without mucking around with the multi-site functionality?

Re: Renaming the textpattern directory

A few people (self included) will create a symlink (shortcut) called “login,” “admin,” etc. rather than rename the textpattern folder. Would that work for you?

Re: Renaming the textpattern directory

A client asked how to prevent bots from “reporting home” that they found a live TXP install. Given Textpattern’s security record, I’m not terribly concerned, but I do routinely get rid of the readme and history files so as not to advertise the version. I thought using an alternate admin directory might further obfuscate the CMS, but Robert recently pointed out that TXP advertises itself in generated feeds, including the version number, which I didn’t know. Feeds aren’t needed on this site, but I notice that TXP still generates feed data even if “Syndicate” is set to “No” on all sections.

Using a symlink to provide an alternate login URL wouldn’t stop bots from finding the textpattern directory, but I don’t think there is a solution for this. But I’ve never had any security problems with Textpattern, and I’m not aware of any concerns that would warrant such thorough purging of TXP’s identity from the site.
