Shouldn’t this be a question for the wp forums?

I do conversions the other way. And one thing that is always a part of my projects is a thorough look at the client’s content first. Nine times out of ten, after doing an audit, we find most of their content is crap and their willing to see the conversion as an opportunity to only keep what directly supports their reason for being online—their business objectives.
So, my advice is to look at your content and ask yourself how much of it is really worth wading through in a conversion. If not much, then simply to a clean install/build of your WP site and manually transfer only the content you’re going to keep. It’s much better.
Think of it like doing a completely fresh install of your computers operating system and pulling over only the apps you really use instead of an upgrade on something that is probably full of old apps/files you don’t need. It always feels good to know you’re starting out fresh and honed.

After being a fan of textpattern so many years I feel your answer to my thread hurts .
I do know this could be an question in wp’s forum but I can’t ask here ? Is this your attitude to support ?
Being a content management system you don’t even want to give the flexibility to your customers to convert between different platforms ? If you don’t want to answer my question or give any support when did you waste your time to post something pointless ? I always liked the textpattern forum cos I thought people here are open minded and always willing to help. If this is the attitude of textpattern team , I’m pretty disappointed . And I could understand why textpattern can’t grow the customer base.
Seriously if you don’t give a damn shit. Don’t waste your time and mine.

Hi Destry
Thanks for your reply. It’s not a client’s project but my personal blog since 2004, you bet it will be a pain in butt if I have to do it manually . The reason why I want to do a conversion is there’s a wp plugin I really want to use . I’m not a programmer and knows nothing about coding so I think I’ll just grab a copy of wordpress to have it. Thank you.

You only posted in this forum 4 times and you do not link to your site(s) here. It is true you registered in 2009 but after your first post, there was silence until today.
My answer was not meant to hurt either you or even wp but don’t you think that your question might have been inappropriate and hurtful for the txp community?

Re: convert textpattern to wordpress please ?
tintin,
I think there might be some misinterpretation of Colak’s response. It’s more often the case than not that the community who’s system you’re migrating to will have the solution your seeking, which is why colak probably pointed you that way. Since you’ve been in this community a long time, you should know there isn’t any outward script. (Few CMSs provide such thing, actually.)
I hear you about the personal site situation. But that doesn’t stop me (a user since 2004) from auditing my own garbage from time to time. Same principle applies.

Re: convert textpattern to wordpress please ?
Now that I think about it, everyone, a clever tactic would be for someone to create a WP plugin that migrates WP installs to Txp, and put that in their plugin library over there. :)

Actually I am a user from 2004 as well. I registered my first username in the forum back to then but I then forgot my login info. I don’t really use the forum much since I’m no technique person hence I just read. I did register my name again in 2009. But the truth is I’ve been with you guys so long. I don’t see any reason for me to lie about how much time I’ve been with you guys and if you don’t believe it . It’s no biggy.
I don’t really think my post hurts. I believe many people here have sites with wp , textpattern and other platforms. We just pick the one suitable for the project . No ? What’s wrong with my thread ? Why is it inappropriate ? I don’t get it .

I hear you . I just chose this community to ask since I don’t even have a wp forum account there. It’s fine if nobody’s here could help. Thank you anyway.

Re: convert textpattern to wordpress please ?
The txp guys (and girls) here are just passionate supporters and not trying to get up your nose but information should be free whatever the CMS. Having never made the transition you want to do I don’t have a definitive answer for you, but google has a few:
- Moving form textpattern to wordpress (part 2 and part 3) using a perl script. The last post is from Oct 2010 so it can’t be all that out of date.
- How to import textpattern into wordpress (now in the web archive).
- WP page on importing content. That includes a CSV converter and you can export your SQL database as excel/CSV. That import may be very rudimentary, though.
Otherwise see if you can use another interim format for which there is a wordpress importer. You can set up a txp template to output your content in another form – for example XML – that you can then use to import from. How successful you will be will depend on how complex your site is.
BTW: out of interest, what is the plugin you want to use on WP? It may be interesting to learn from for txp (independent of your wish to switch).

I think I am pretty safe in saying that the Textpattern database structure has stayed pretty constant over the years. So as far as I know, the Wordpress conversion utility handles things just fine. For your sake, though, I hope you don’t plan on continuing to use Textile – because you probably won’t be able to do so.
I have long been an advocate of interoperability between blogging tools. As someone who was doing site conversions back in the dark ages, I have never been happy with the conversion process and wasted too much time and energy in the process.
I kept bouncing around because the grass always seemed greener somewhere else, even though I should have known better. I do intend to convert the site back to Textpattern one last time as soon I get the perfect template – which knowing me, is going to be a while.
