Meetup - London, 3 Sept 2011

Bloke and I are aiming to meetup for informal dialogue and drinks in London sometime Saturday afternoon on the 3rd of September. No agenda at this point, but anyone is welcome to join.

Depending on how many people we get, we can decide how to play it. Whatever the case, plan on bringing a Txp topic to share. No matter what it is.

I could probably make it to London, need to check my diary nearer the time. But initially pencil me in.

Hey, I will be working in Switzerland from August to December. If I can find a cheap airfare, I could just about squeeze in a trip to join you (and stay with my cousin for free).

But if I come along, we need to rename this as the London/Canberra meetup.

That’d be awesome. Would love to see you. Is Eurostar an option? Seems like you can hook up to it from various places in Switzerland via TGV.

Once you’ve factored in getting to the airport 2+ hours early, having your bags lost by the airline, being treated like a terrorist, having to travel back to central London from the airport on the outskirts, and bad/overpriced food, the train is arguably a more attractive way to do it. Not much difference in time, all told.

Re: Meetup - London, 3 Sept 2011

Just checked online quickly. Trains (TGV Geneva > Paris, cross-city Metro, Eurostar Paris > London) is 7 hours and GBP180. Flights direct into London City are 1.45 hours and AUD411, and even cheaper into other airports.

I think a flight is a better option as I can leave Geneva on a Friday night and have more time in London – my favourite city in the whole world! Sure, security is a pain but with only socks and jocks I’m not planning to check luggage in.

Stef, you’re going to like this :)

(Ed.) Just to be a little more clear about that link, it’s to the Txp Facebook group, where there is also an Event for this meetup and it’s getting a little attention already. I think we’re going to have to have Stef take a podium, or something.

We can do that. It even has a nice global vibe to it. But then you have to come for sure!

Re: Meetup - London, 3 Sept 2011

Less than 2 weeks to go. Does anyone else fancy dropping into London for 568ml of beer (or multiples thereof) with us? I’m easy to spot, and don’t bite.

Although I mentioned it in the Facebook thread, for the benefit of non-FBers the official meetup time is from 13:30 but I’ll be in London all day so if you can’t make the afternoon please speak up and I’ll do what I can to meet up with you in the morning at a location of your choice (go go Oyster card!)

P.S. Though the thread title says London-Canberra I don’t know of any such named city in Australia so to allay any confusion it’s London, England :-)

568ml sounds better than 425 ml

Re: Meetup - London, 3 Sept 2011

I’m in a quandary now… The following week is a short week for us (local public holiday plus an additional day off from work), and I am going to Cyprus. Should I be extravagent and fly to London for this meet-up, purely to catch-up with you lot? The offer of a beer does make it more tempting.

Ditto.

Since I still have the European vibe I thought I’d go with the SI units. I have once tried asking a barman for “568ml of your finest lager” but he looked at me like I had two heads and said “you wanna pint or not?” Guess that told me.

As it happens, I’ll be in London that day for Science Online London at the British Library. Where will this Txp meetup take place?

Awesome! We’re planning to meet at The Porterhouse in Covent Garden from about 13:30. As I mentioned earlier if you can’t make that, let me know a convenient spot near where you’ll be in the morning and I’ll try and get over there.
