Recommendations for an automatic pdf creator

Does anyone have any recommendations for a library for creating PDFs automatically from certain content in the database? It’s been a while since I last researched and the one I found then was prohibitively expensive for non-private use.

I do need some basic degree of design control. My ideal scenario would be to be able to prepare a template with placeholders that are replaced with content (including images) from the database. Maybe there is an database » xml » pdf or an database » rtf » pdf variant that can be done with rah_external_output.

I’d be grateful for any suggestions!

Re: Recommendations for an automatic pdf creator

There is a powerful textile-to-latex converter, and the output of this could be post-processed with pdflatex in order to generate a PDF on the fly. However, this would not work for the Textile 2.3 syntax with it’s advanced features for tables, only Textile 2.0 is supported by Redcloth.
