Diaspora invites

Just invited Els on Diaspora and then thought I’d write a note here that I have some invites still, so if any of you is interested, drop me a message with an email addy. Yup.

Re: Diaspora invites

I’d be interested just to see how it works. Do you two think it is going to take off? From that I have seen, the system requirements are a bit extreme.

Re: Diaspora invites

Michael, nobody can say if it’s going to “take off”, but there are quite a number of users already despite the fact that it’s in alpha. I personally like the idea very much and would support it with my little share. I have not been posting there because not many of my friends are using it (yet!) but I’m keeping an eye and they are building it gradually. Oh, and I speak of the main pod — there are many pods available already where one can register without an invitation.

Re: Diaspora invites

I signed up for a Facebook account the very day they open it up to the public – and then didn’t log back in for months because there was nothing to do until they started adding app stuff. After all the privacy stuff and with 400+ friends there, I still do things at the site these days but otherwise keep the rest of my interactions separate.

Re: Diaspora invites

I’ll take one if you’ve an invite left. Looks like an interesting project.

Send an email to either of us with a DM so that you could get an invite.

Re: Diaspora invites

I just tried signing up on diasp.org and searching for these people. No luck.

Right now, diaspora kind of reminds me of Fidonet circa 1994 except that actually got messages from one place to another.

Re: Diaspora invites

Search doesn’t work through pods right now but you can add people directly with their handle — click on a profile and you will see the diaspora handle next to their name.

Re: Diaspora invites

I wasn’t sure what you meant by handle at first but I got it working.

If your friend is on another server (pod) it will say that it could not find them. Wait a minute and search for them a second time and you should see them. – How do I Share/Add contacts?

I think that aspect is going to have to improve at some point.

If I try that search I only see Ralitza and me…

BTW, I found this tutorial useful. (Still haven’t got the hang of it though.)

Re: Diaspora invites

It seems like what it is doing is making a copy of a profile on the companion site. If I click on you in my contacts, I get this profile rather than your original. It seems that the handle is the key identifier and you can end up with profile urls on sister sites that you have never visited. That is kind of weird, but perhaps not an issue to most people.

This is the textpattern list over here – kind of lonely at the moment.
