Common development time
Hello everyone,
I would do a small survey. I wonder how long on average used to create a site using Textpattern. Starting from graphic design and then the rest. Let’s say the site has an average complexity. I more or less use 60 to 80 hours. And you?

That could be pretty hard to estimate, to me at least, especially when the definition of ‘average complexity’ variates and isn’t same for everyone. Not to mention that for many of us, there is more than a single person involved in a project.
Personally, all I can say that drawing a single object, like for example a poster or a single icon set can already take days, weeks or even months, not to mention programming, and platform specific integration. Sorry, unfortunately I can’t give a set time.

Re: Common development time
I’m about the same as you, actually. But I usually work alongside a graphic designer, so I’m leaving out development of a lot of the graphics.
I would add that it’s tempting to say “every project is different; there is no average” but I believe that most teams find a comfort zone and tend to stay there until they are prodded by their business consultants. :-)
I saw an average drop of 20-40 hours per project once I stopped using a larger CMS, but quickly found that more work from the same clients filled in that time. So it’s “less work that I don’t want to do” and more customization, I think. And that’s just fine with me!

Re: Common development time
I think your estimate is quite accurate. Excluding pet projects and really basic sites, sites for clients that have very specific needs and require custom coding, plugin personalization, picky graphic adjustments, and so on, 60-80 hours (distributed in many weeks) it’s a sort of good baseline for an average project. Without complex backend customization, funny features not yet envisioned by any smd_ plugins, and so on. :)
