Remove comments/discuss from core

What about remove comments(discuss) from core and move it to plugin?

imho:

  • TxP have very poor comments support in core. If your use comments, then need install some additional plugins for comfortable use it.
  • TxP have some bug with comments support.
  • TxP is not only blogs CMS. (I have many not blog sites and I don’t use comments)

aks_cron : Cron inside Textpattern | aks_article : extended article_custom tag
aks_cache : cache for TxP | aks_dragdrop : Drag&Drop categories (article, link, image, file)

Re: Remove comments/discuss from core

Or simply don’t create tables
  • txp_discuss
  • txp_discuss_ipban
  • txp_discuss_nonce

if set “No” in option “Accept comments?” and hide “Comments” tab.

It’s a bit drastic! Some people use them, even though they are a bit flawed. I’ve proposed some discussion on the subject and making comments better is something I’d like to look into one day.

Improving core support would address your first point. The second point is not a bug as such, it’s just a source of confusion. The auto_append stuff could be removed from prefs fairly easily: do we want to do that? I don’t know if it impacts other stuff (I’m not a heavy user of comments — other people may have a better grasp on this).

Regarding point 3, a lot of sites don’t use files or links but txp_file and txp_link are installed by default. If we start removing stuff and forcing people to use plugins for fairly ‘standard’ features (I’m using the term loosely because — until now — images have been lacking), TXP would become “The CMS that doesn’t do anything unless you install 100 plugins”. Reminds me of another well-known CMS out there ;-)

Comments are useful to a lot of people running TXP. If support for them could be improved / standardised and some of the daft abundance of tags and options could be consolidated — or at least made less confusing — I think that would be the way to go.

But I’ve said it before, never say never. If an official comments plugin turns out to be the best way to do this then it should be considered.
