Textile: Can't Right-Justify Text With an EM-Dash

Doing:

“p>. — Text text text”

It will textile the emdash but it will not justify properly. If you remove the double-dash (here textiled into an emdash), it works just fine.

As with all block tags in Textile, you have to put a space after the dot (don’t worry – it won’t be rendered).

Re: Textile: Can't Right-Justify Text With an EM-Dash

I should’ve noticed that when Textile rendered the emdash here, it killed the space I had. Just to be clear, it is:

“p>. dashdash Text Text Text”

Furthermore, I just noticed that if you try to have a mid-sentence aside separated by em dashes, Textile renders it as deleted text.

For example;

[Unrendered Text]
This is a sentence[dashdash]and here is the clause[dashdash]and here is the rest of the sentence.

[Should Look Like This]
This is a sentence—and here is the clause—and here is the rest of the sentence.

[But It Comes Out Like This]
This is a sentence-<del>and here is the clause</del>-and here is the rest of the sentence.

Re: Textile: Can't Right-Justify Text With an EM-Dash

But of course I think the usage of space before and after em dashes is intentional, since a way of rendering crossed-out text is needed as well.

So to include em dashes you use:

This is a sentence[space][dashdash][space]and here is the clause[space][dashdash][space]and here is the rest of the sentence.

which is rendered like so:

This is a sentence — and here is the clause — and here is the rest of the sentence.

Also language specific typography is coming into this as well. IIRC in some countries you don’t have spaces between words and dashes, and in some countries only after it, and in some countries before and after. So there is no, one size fits all, unfortunately.

Wow, talk about resurrecting an old thread.

I just use mdash; which works just fine. It’d be nice to be able to do it with Textile but I’m not too worried about it.
