Can Textpattern do the job for me
Hi all,
When I gonna use Textpattern it is for a site over my family roots (genealogy)
Every person in the pedigree get its own peronal card (read personal card as a new page), it is important to link several personal cards together, is this possible with Textpattern.
The site will hold several thousands pages, can Textpattern handle this
The next thing I need are several menu’s with submenu’s, is this also possible with Textpattern

Re: Can Textpattern do the job for me
Short answer: Yes, probably it can be done with Textpattern.
But: I am lazy, so here’s how I would do it:
If you’re on a Mac, get VoodooPad from Flying Meat or else set up any wiki engine on your webhost. Then, as you create a new page it will be for a single person. Add all the info you want. Then, since it is a wiki, every time the name of a person is mentioned it will automatically be a link to the page of said family member.
If you use Voodoo Pad you will have to export it to HTML once you’re done.
Coming to think of it, once we’re at the menus and sub menus Voodoo Pad or your average wiki will probably be not enough. Either way you’d end up doing some things on you own.
I would think a good genealogy software were to offer some nice export functionality as I think it will be a bit tedious to handle thousands of linked pages using textpattern. But that’s just my .2 cents. Don’t listen to me, listen to the next comment ;-)

Re: Can Textpattern do the job for me
Textpattern can handle lots of articles and you can interrelate articles in a variety of ways but you will start coming up against limitations if you want relationships to work across multiple levels in a deep tree structure as txp doesn’t support multi-level sub-sections. There may be ways around this by building relationships in a different way but unless your needs are comparatively simply I think you may struggle with bending textpattern to your needs.
As Stephan says, there are a host of dedicated packages for different platforms, often with online export or as an online service. Maybe gensoftreviews.com is of help in finding one that meets your needs.
