No excerpt field on admin side

In a 4.0.6 installation the excerpt field is gone. I can’t remember when this happened as it was never needed until now. There are no plugins that could cause this (I deactivated everything in order to exclude this side), there were no changes made to the core code, I get the green “All checks passed”. To be absolutely sure I reinstalled everything but it was of no avail. Anything I forgot to try?

Admin > Preferences > Advanced > Articles use excerpts?
