Textpattern, Zend and Joyent Shared Accelerators
Following on from the message from Joyent support that Zend is no longer supporting Solaris, please would someone with greater knowledge than me of all things PHP (not hard!), help me understand if I can safely ignore this, or if I should to follow the advice from Joyent’s support wiki to freeze PHP at version 5.2.9?
1) Does the presence or absence of the Zend Optimiser have any affect on Textpattern performance?
2) What is Ion-Cube? Again, does Textpattern take advantage of this?
3) What are the long term implications of this announcement (if any) that I should be aware of as a Textpattern user?
What I’m looking for is an idiot’s guide to all of this!
Thanks for your help.

No. Zend Optimizer is an extension to PHP which allows users to run proprietary encrypted PHP applications. Textpattern is not encrypted but open source so the absence of Zend Optimizer will not affect Textpattern at all.

No. Same as above, just a different product.
3) What are the long term implications of this announcement (if any) that I should be aware of as a Textpattern user?
Long term implications of Textpattern use (and that of any open source product): Less stress, lower heart rate, increased life quality, longevity as one needn’t care about such announcements.

Excellent news Robert, thanks for the clear explanation. I shall relax and continue to enjoy using Textpattern, hopefully long into the future!
Thanks
