[request] Write-tab character entity plugin?
I’ve looked around a bit, but haven’t been able to find:
An admin-side plugin that would put some kind of a shortcut menu or something to insert a character entity into the body field. Like if I’m writing along and I need a ñ for example, instead of having to go look it up I could just open up a menu and select the right character to insert it.
Does anything like this exist? Would it be useful for others?

if you’re a Snow Leoparder, you can define abbreviations for commonly used text strings.

Yay Mac! Unfortunately though, I’d like this feature for my clients, most of whom are on PC, using some terrible old browser…

Any reason? The content is UTF-8 (unicode). No need for entities.
If the client can’t output the char directly by keyboard (nor remember the code), any OS’ char/translator/word-predict/mapper can do it. Yay Windows 7.

So wait, maybe I’m totally baked. I mean, Textpattern encodes quotes properly for a reason though, right? If I want to throw in say, an n with a tilde over it – I can’t just paste it on in there if I want it to display correctly for everyone, right? I need to use an entity. Or so I thought…

You need only use entities if you use charset that doesn’t hold that char. But UTF-8 holds every unicode char.

No, quotes are encoded because they are changed to match typography. Straight quotes are only used in code, not in text.
Only thing you must encode are <
, >
, "
, &
by (X)HTML markup specs, ‘cause those are used to generate markup tags. And Textile does that for you.

Huh, okay thanks. So have you ever seen a site with some goofy characters thrown in, like question marks in little diamonds, for example – I’ve even seen it occasionally on nytimes.com or a big site like that. Do you know what is happening there?

Only if there is charset gone wrong or I don’t have support for that used language (like japanese).
But in general, everything works fine. Like wikipedia, in every language.
