Questions about an idea for a site with user generated content

So I’d like to make a website for a small number of users and allow them to have profiles and upload images. Think of it as a photo community site.

So the key to this is people having accounts and being able to log in (they have to be real users in Textpattern) and administer their own accounts (e.g. change password.) Also a very important part of it is tagging of the photos, which is crucial.

What I’m finding hard to wrap my head around is how to make it as painless as possible to people to upload images and make TXP articles (add descriptions, tags, etc.) without being web savvy. I definitely want to go around making the TXP interface available to them because I think the whole article concept will throw most of them off, so I’d like to offer a “compact” interface for creating articles and uploading images. I would ideally like to have a form that would allow for multiple file upload or something similar. Would this be possible with some custom programming?

Plugins I was planning to use: mem plugins + ign plugin for the public forms, and tru_tags for the tags as keywords functionality, but that’s where it ends basically.

Another idea is to make people host their photos on Flickr or some other photo sharing site, and make them post URIs to photos into my site (which would make things with posting articles way easier), but that kind of beats the purpose of the site itself.

Has anyone had any similar experiences with this kind of thing? Any existing sites that have similar functionality?

Any help is greatly appreciated.
