Howdy folks
I’ve just pushed a big update to my personal design portfolio / blog / etc. There’s some notable CSS + Textpattern geekery to be found in a couple of the sections. I updated my install to 4.0.8 and made use of the new <txp:variable> tags and other things.
Here’s the shimmy:
- Rocketfuelled.com/essays features some CSS and animated GIF fun. I have no doubt a lot of this won’t work in anything but the most modern browsers and I’m not too interested in trying to cater for them; this is, rarely for me, an opportunity to just have fun and not sweat over browser inconsistencies. I had wanted to do some AJAX-y stuff with this section to improve the experience a bit but it proved way beyond my technical capabilities. I also played a little with joining each article by category2, using this method on TXP Tips: http://txptips.com/create-next-prev-links-according-to-category1 however the limited capability of the next / previous buttons (ie. there was no automatic identification of the article being the first / last in the sequence) made it less useful, so it’s simply a set of articles linked-together using a custom field.
- Rocketfuelled.com/drawings makes use of the very clever vdh_flickr plugin. Initially I had frustrations with this as there’s a middle step in the default process that vdh_flickr gives that I didn’t want. I tried many ways to hack it with varying degrees of success, none of which worked 100%. So I took the approach used in this article from TXP Tips and now I just add my own ‘parent’ article with the specific set and image URL going into the same custom field as used above.
- Rocketfuelled.com/oh mostly uses some CSS trickery and the standard Next / Previous functionality to browse through.
Anyways, there you go. Perhaps some useful stuff in there for anyone wanting to do something similar? Textpattern certainly is a beauty of a thing!
