[resolved] File permissions issue - TXP or (mt) hosting?
Hi all, trying to diagnose a rather odd problem that has cropped up on a Mediatemple hosted TXP site for a client. It’s running TXP 4.06 and has all of a sudden starting reporting an inability to write to the ‘Files’ directory (this has been working fine until now).
From the pre-flight check in ‘Admin’, I’m getting:
File directory path is not writable: /[clientname]/html/files
Temporary directory path is not writable: /[clientname]/html/textpattern/tmp
On checking, all the appropriate file permissions are correct and writable.
Anyone seen anything similar, or is this – as I suspect – a hosting issue?
cheers
Andrew

Andrew,
I have a lot of sites with (mt) – some on the grid service and a bunch of others on a dedicated.
Looks like from the paths you posted that you are on the grid.
I’ve never had this issue with my file directory – although I never leave them in the public tree (I always use /domain-name/files)
Might not hurt to give them a call – the customer service is pretty amazing over there.
Good luck – please report back if you find anything that might be useful to others with sites on (mt).

renobird, thanks for responding to this (and apologies for taking so long to say so). Thanks for the tip on the public tree – good point.
Will report back from (mt) if they have any suggestions…

Wise words, Els. Have done so, but hasn’t made any difference – will check this out with the guys at (mt) and report back

Just to report back (and close this one off) – as suspected it was a problem with the hosts, not with TXP. The cluster on (mt) had changed, meaning the paths that TXP used for temporary files and uploads were no longer valid. One interesting point was that TXP seems, by default, to pick up the absolute rather than virtual path, meaning that if the cluster does change for whatever reason, this problem might arise. The virtual path does work, however, so you can use that instead.
Hope that’s helpful to someone – thanks for the advice everyone.
