How do I share a textpattern installation among several virtual hosts?

I run a server with several textpattern installations.

Each blog runs on its own Apache virtual host.

So right now each textpattern installation is located in:

/data/www/virtual/siteA/htdocs/
/data/www/virtual/siteB/htdocs/
/data/www/virtual/siteC/htdocs/blog/
/data/www/virtual/siteD/htdocs/blog/
/data/www/virtual/siteE/htdocs/

Notice that some sites do not use textpattern at their DocumentRoot, however, this is the exception. Most of them use textpattern at their DocumentRoot.

For N blogs, I have N copies of textpattern installed.
Every time I need to upgrade textpattern to a new version, I need to do N sequential upgrades. This process is tedious and error prone.

I would like the N blogs to share 1 textpattern installation, so that I only need to upgrade once per release.

How can this be accomplished? Can I have textpattern reside some central place and then make symbolic links to this folder?

What do you suggest?

Of course each site will need to have its own config.php, .htaccess, and so on, but it should be possible to share the identical core textpattern files.

I’m looking forward to hearing your suggestions.

Have never tried it myself, but there is a tutorial in Textbook.
