Complex sorting

Hi.

Is it possible to to use math and variables to determine sort order in an article_custom tag?

I’m working on a site that uses a custom field to catch an “Editor’s Choice” rating and highlight certain articles, and my client wants to present a list on the home page sorted by rating and freshness.

I’ve read that Textpattern’s sort attribute is based on SQL. My client developed an algorithm he wants to use to determine sort order for this list, but I’m not sure how to express it in SQL.

What’s the outlook?
