One Million Comments?

Hi,
I have a clients who wants to be able for people to leave comments on the site, but is aiming for 1 million messages! will textpattern handle this? An if so is comments the way to go or not, any suggestions?

UPDATE:
Just been on textpattern.org and found the plugin sdr_guestbook, would this work? hard to say with out 1 million comments I guess?

Shouldn’t be a problem. Textpattern uses a MySQL INT column type to store the comment-ID, so that’s 2147483647 comments. I wouldn’t recommend displaying them all on one page though ;)

Don’t use sdr_guestbook for this. It’s not supported anymore, it still works but has issues with recent TXP versions. Try gocom’s plugin.

Oliver,

Another option is to farm out the comments to a service, especially if commenting will be that active. I have no doubt that Textpattern can handle the load, just wanted to let you know of alternatives.

Check out DISQUS, and there are others playing in the “Comments 2.0” space.

Colak, not sure if you manage that site, but on this comment seems to have an unclosed <i> tag which renders half of the comments in italics. There is also an error on Tidy because of another nonexistent <it> tag.
