Alternative to "Excerpt"

Instead of doing the excerpt tag, is there a way to just truncate the body of an article to a certain character limit?

Or rss_auto_excerpt which allows you to control the excerpt length by “number of characters”, “number of words” or “number of paragraphs”. It also ensures that if you use “number of characters” the excerpt is not truncated in the middle of a word.
