messy vs section/title
I read a lot about the change from messy urls to section/title, but could not find the solution to my problem.
I created a new website with permanent link mode set to messy. When I change to section/title some of my links result in the 404page. Here is the url (at the moment in messy mode):
http://www.siba.net/siba_textpattern/
My section names are lower case. I read all the the FAQ about the permanent link mode. Diagnostics is ok.
Links created with Textiles “linktext:url are still working after the change (i.e. the links page).
Links created with <txp:section name=“home”>Home</txp:section> dont’ work after the change.
zem_contact_reborn links also don’t work after the change.
Am I down to the troublesome problem with mod_rewrite and .htaccess from the server side?
Any suggestions are very much appreciated.

Re: messy vs section/title
Are you using any section related or other plugins? I had a similar problem last week and don’t remember exactly what it was but I went through the plugins and and switched on and off until the culprit was found.
Have you figured it out by now anyway?

Hi whaleen,
No I haven’t figured out a solutions yet. I had to leave the messy mode, which I find very annoying.
I also took your advice and turned the 3 plugins I use off. No difference. Also, I need the plugins for part of the navigation as well.
What did you do once you had found the plugin which was causing the problem?

Re: messy vs section/title
I disabled a “sed section” or some such named plugin which was meant to build ‘sub sections’. I got sloppy with it but I did not alter any core code. I’m sorry nothing comes to mind but I am experiencing issues in a similar variety and will come back to this conversation come tuesday. Can you explain your current trouble with what you have now?

whaleen, sed_section_fields doesn’t create subsections.

What is the HTML output of the Textile links? The TXP-tag links? “Don’t work” is not specific.
Have you read this FAQ?

Re: messy vs section/title
I have this same problem. Messy URLs work fine but Clean do not. My hosting company is Bluehost, which Textpattern claims to support Clean URLs out of the box. This was not the case, and I get the 404 page as well. After working with Bluehost tech support, I was told there should not be a problem, and was suggested to edit my .htaccess file. I did this in all possible variations to no avail- Clean URLs just wouldn’t work.
Eventually, after hours with tech support, I have been told that there is some trouble with <a href=“http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/nocturne/etc/symlinks.html”>Symlinks</a>. They could offer no help as to what I might do about the situation, except to seek Textpattern support. Any ideas?

Re: messy vs section/title
otti, the 404 page I get when visiting http://www.siba.net/siba_textpattern/products is not generated by Textpattern, so the mod_rewrite rules don’t work correctly. It’s not plugin related, because in this case Textpattern is not used when the 404 is shown.
It would help if the following information was provided:- is the 404 page generated by Textpattern?
- which OS + webserver is used to host the website?
- did you try using a 404 handler instead of mod_rewrite?

Re: messy vs section/title
Hi ruud,
I’m realising now that I don’t have any other chance than dealing with the hosting provider, since you pointed out that these errors are not created by Textpattern. I know that the Web Hosting Server is on a Unix based system (They don’t supply any Windows based hosting options).
I understand know that the erroro page (in this case) is generated from the server side, but why do I get Textpattern 404 pages when I try to access i.e. http://www.siba.net/siba_textpattern/productst (I just added a “t” at the end of products to see what will happen?
Can you please explain?

Re: messy vs section/title
Hi iblastoff,
I had to set the mode back to messy, since my client wants to see the progress on the site.
Will get back to you when it is set to section/title again.
