More flexible "Disabled after" preference option

At the moment the “Disabled after” option is a select list with 7 options. For myself the 6 options of specified durations are not suitable so I use the “Never” option but this isn’t really what I want either. Would it be possible to have the “Disabled after” option in the same format as the “Logs expire after how many days?” option, that is, be able to enter the number of weeks you require rather than being restricted to the options in the select list? I would envisage that a “0” (zero) would represent “Never”.

And to make things even more difficult for you Devs would it be possible to do this on a section by section basis moving the option out of Preferences into the Sections tab?

And further, cuz I tend to think of these things as I write, what about having the option to disable comments entirely also on a section by section basis and also moved to the Sections tab?

Separate expiration options for different sections are good idea :)

I second this. And if the per-section is too much (I think it would modify meny fields in the db), maybe a flexible global disabling comment options could be done in a more straightforward way (just guessing, actually).

Re: More flexible "Disabled after" preference option

Well the reason I asked for “per section” options is that if you look at thebombsite.com you will see that there are 3 main sections; weblog, coding and themes. For coding and themes I need comments to remain open permanently but for the weblog I could do with a limit. At the moment, because the options are global, the weblog section has to remain open permanently with the other two. I suspect there may be a few users out there with this dilema. It’s not a major problem, though the weblog does tend to attract the spammers, but I feel the extra flexibility would be a good addition.

Re: More flexible "Disabled after" preference option

Hi.
Wouldn’t be better to jump from “global disabling comments optionr “ to “disabling comment option per article” instead of being it “per section”?

Re: More flexible "Disabled after" preference option

You can already disable comments “per article” under the “More” option on the “Write” tab Julián. Being able to disable a complete section would add a useful option.

Re: More flexible "Disabled after" preference option

Yes, yes, you are right, but I wanted to mean: to be able to set “comments allowed” duration directly on each article.

The “per section” approach would be useful, no doubt. Even, if this could be set both “per article” and “per section”, the “per article” value could default to the “per section” value, or be changed per article.
Much similar the way the “comment invitation” works.

Yes I can see where the “per article” would be handy.

Stuart

You could post this as a request over on sed_section_fields. As fas as I recall from what I did on the sed_comment_pack (which has some interesting per-article comment controls) it should be quite possible as a plugin and no need to disturb the devs.
