Test drive a template - overriding page & style?

Is there an effective way to test drive a template with my site and all existing articles but not affect the site for normal external use?

My thought is it would be nice to be able to override the page & style as a URL parameter. That way I can privately look at changes I might have in progress, debug them, but not affect the normal visitors to the site.

I thought this might be a common pattern but was unfortunately not able to find an answer when I searched.

Thanks for the help!

At present TXP has no “theme mechanism” which would make switching between a current and a potential future theme simple.

One way it can be done is to develop the new theme either in a sub-directory or on your PC/Mac using something like MAMMP, XAMMP or LAMMP and importing a current database dump (SQL Dump) as the starting point to get all your articles and comments etc.

Re: Test drive a template - overriding page & style?

I understand that there is currently no “theme mechanism” with Textpattern. However, I always pictured a theme mechanism being more about creating, packaging, sharing, installing a site design (theme) extremely simply like with a single file.

Maybe I will play with the code and see if there is a way to pass in and override the page and/or style with some tweaks.
