Re: The Bombsite redesign.

@Peter – thanks for the info on setting backgrounds via the browser. It’s not something I do myself so I don’t see that problem at my end but now that I know about it… As for the raggedy icons they looked OK to me so I’m wondering if it’s connected to background colour. I’m not sure there is anything I can do with the icons other than re-set them on a white background which I have now done so let me know if they look better. The actual icons come from the linjiang system and linjiang system 2 icon sets via Icon Buffet. They are not my own creations. The vertical positioning is a bit of a compromise. I tend to find that FF, Opera and for the most part IE7 and IE6 position things vertically in an almost identical manner but then, when I check with Safari I find they have dropped 2 or 3 pixels and it renders text differently. Also they may look a little off simply because I have used lower case for all links. With capital letters the alignment may have looked a little better but that’s my choice. :)

I’ve removed the colons in the footer and set the body background.

@Els – yes I removed the caching plug-ins yesterday so the time should be correct. They were having an effect. Having said that we moved to BST last night so I’m now in a quandary about whether to reflect the move or remain with GMT. :(

All fonts are set as percentages so any browser preferences should change everything except the top logo. I like them the way they are so I shall respect your opinion but ignore it. ;)

Anyway I had large title fonts before!

@MsContrary – I’m definitely no spring chicken, it’s just the way I walk. :)

They look raggedy to me too, the background did not make a difference. It may be because you are using the gifs, the pngs tend to be better. Strange thing is that the other icons look all right, it’s just the ‘read the full article’ icons…

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

I just had a look at your round arrow – the read full article icon. It is on a black background whereas it should have been made on a white background so the jaggies would disappear. I’ve tried fiddling with it to improve it but it’s a slow process. Could you swop them for ones designed for a white background?

Re the blue/grey thing I see it like this in Firefox.
In IE6 and Opera I see this

yes i agree,
I think if your going to go minimalist do it with every element on the page.
72 px trebuchet isnt minimalist.
if you fount the right font and size for the head i think it would work though.

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

The icons are definitely on white backgrounds (apart from the large arrow in the archives) and are in fact jpgs at “100%”. Maybe you need to do a ctrl-F5 to ensure you have the changed images. If that doesn’t work I can change them to pngs but I shall wait until I hear back on that.

I’ve reduced the title font sizes a bit. I should say I wasn’t attempting to be minimal, just simple. I’m not sure they are quite the same thing.

I’ve added another “background” which should sort your “comment link” problem Peter. I missed that bit. ;)

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

ok then maybe “clean” is a better word than minimal.
I would also ad is that there isnt a visual hierarchy.

sorry if my reply sounded harsh wasnt intended to i like your work.

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

No problem Kevin. I didn’t take it as “harsh” and in any case, if I couldn’t take the criticism, I wouldn’t have posted in the first place. :)
Can you explain a little about what you mean by “visual hierarchy” and how it would apply to the site? I should say that I have never considered myself as a designer. I’m the builder or constructor. I generally leave the decorating to others but this is my site so I have a go at it from time to time. ;)

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

The round arrow and speech mark icons no longer look jagged :) There’s just one problem now, in Firefox, the folder icon has been replaced by a blue background, like the comments link problem. What was it that caused the FF problem with the comments link?

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

Mmmm. Well that doesn’t seem logical. I merely added a background colour to the link as the background image is part of the CSS for the link, same as the download, read more and comment links. I’m thinking the problem is with your browser cache and it’s still trying to display the original gif image which doesn’t exist any more. Try a long-held ctrl-F5 and let me know please.

Re: The Bombsite redesign.

ctrl_F5 worked, so it was me. Usually is…

btw, going off topic for a mo, I just got your email. I got it late cos XP decided I might have a problem with my drives and decided while checking that lots of files were invalid. So it took away all my saved settings for all my internet apps and I’ve had to start everything again from new. All my bookmarks and emails seemed to have disappeared but thankfully I got them all back I think.

hi,
Visual hierarchy is how you assign importance to elements on a page visually. Its how you guide the readers/users eye around the page and its the first thing they teach you in graphic design college.
If there isn’t one defined the eye just moves back and forth and can’t rest- it has to take in to much at once which is the case with your site. Your basically just helping the reader break down the info. If you google image search it theres loads of results – i didnt find any really nice examples though. The easiest example is to look at the front page of a news paper and notice how your eye goes from element to element and why.

Simple things you can use are font weight, color, tint, font size, letterspacing and line.

ok im going to stop preaching now, hope that helps.
