NASA Astrobiology

http://astrobiology.nasa.gov

We’re just went live today, but I consider it still very much between alpha and beta with lots of things still pretty rough and/or not quite working, but I thought I’d share it with everyone anyway. The next stage is to fix bugs and focus on social networking features. Please use the comment box at the bottom if you want!

Thanks to a bunch of folks who helped me with my questions over the past few months!!!

I think its a pretty ambitious use of Txp but so far it can handle everything we want. We’ll be upgrading the hardware soon to handle the traffic, so please excuse any slowness for now.. :)

Here are the plugins we’re using (in addition to 3,100 lines of custom plugin code)

aam_typogrify (this might be turned off…)
asy_dashboard
asy_wondertag
chh_if_data
gbp_permanent_links (the key to making the psudo sub-sections work!)
ied_hide_in_admin
ign_password_protect (coming soon for logins for all our folks)
rss_admin_show_adv_opts
rss_auto_excerpt
rss_unlimited_categories (another key plugin)
rvm_css (rudd’s plugins are simple and very useful)
rvm_maintenance
rvm_plugin_diff
rvm_privileged
rvm_substr
tru_tags
upm_image
upm_img_popper
upm_savenew
zem_contact_reborn
zem_event
zem_nth
zem_prblock

Thanks,
Shige

Re: NASA Astrobiology

Thanks, we worked with the fine folks at Cuban Council to make it look good and Mootools for the lightweight Javascript framework.

There is lots of bugs to fix and a lot more features to add before its really done, but so far I’m really happy with using Texpattern for this project.

Re: NASA Astrobiology

typeshige : In IE 7 the top bar with the white is not showing up. Please remedy when you can.

The lower level pages such as http://astrobiology.nasa.gov/astep where it says HOME | NAI | ASTEP … the text shows up with transparency, but the background is cut off. IE 6 is fine though and so is Firefox.

Please check or if anyone else can check IE7 please advise if they see what I’m seeing.

Thanks.

Re: NASA Astrobiology

Thank you very much!! I got some nagging search problems but I now realize IE 7 has problems.

We developed with IE6, Firefox but not IE7 (and that shows…)

Re: NASA Astrobiology

Yea and right now IE 7 accounts in omniture for 41.5% internet average according to my reports from them so just FYI, hopefully it’s an easy fix. I rarely code for version types (in hopes it’s correct) but with something this large I wanted to help out. And again, kudos on this design. Freakin awesome.

Re: NASA Astrobiology

Looks great, and it’s oddly gratifying to learn that my Typogrify plugin is seeing use on a NASA website. :-)

Re: NASA Astrobiology

I really like the idea of it. I need to run some tests to see how often its affecting the output. Depending on that and what overhead it imposes, we might have to cache the output somewhere..
