Commercial TXP Plugins

Hi,

I have no clue if this is the right place to ask, but

I wonder why there are plugin developers who let people pay for a copy of their plugins. I mean is this compliant with the Textpattern License?

I’m a plugin dev myself and I think that this is not the right way to get something back…

What does the txp team think about that?

Re: Commercial TXP Plugins

TXP uses GPL right now so you can charge for plugins if you want to. There are several occasions where plugins are for sale (glz_custom_fields), ransomed (some of zem’s plugins), or made freely available.

Re: Commercial TXP Plugins

TXP plugins should have a GPL-compatible license. That doesn’t conflict with asking people to pay for a plugin. It does mean that those who paid for a plugin with a GPL-compatible license are free to redistribute that plugin at no cost, although out of respect for the original author, people generally don’t do this.

Christian, what is the right way to get something back?

Re: Commercial TXP Plugins

In general I believe most of the devs are happy with some positive feedback. If that’s not enough, I can imagine to ask people to donate some bucks. I think this ransom way is also a good idea, because the plugin will be available for free when the target figure is met. (Or did I misunderstand the ransom concept?)

When everybody starts to commercialize their plugins, textpattern won’t be a good choice for a CMS anymore. I believe that especially the glz_custom_fields plugin is not so special or extensive, that one should pay for it. In fact it is something, that should be built-in…

And don’t get me wrong: I respect other people’s work and I have no special interest in the custom fields plugin.

Re: Commercial TXP Plugins

Who says “everybody” will do this? From the very beginning this has been possible (this is possible with WordPress and ANY GPL-licensed cms), yet the vast majority of Txp plugins are still free.

According to one of the older concepts of what makes people tick, motivation can stem from a lot of reasons. Generating a stream of income is as valid as the desire to acquire reputation among the social community, to learn and educate yourself, or even to attract potential spouses (this factor is not very relevant for coding geeks, I’m afraid).

So each of the contributing developers, documentation writers and all other supporters has their own valid reason for doing what s/he does. Freedom of reasons, so to speak. You are trying to argue for “free as in beer”, not for “free as in speech”, I think, which isn’t the intent of free software.

IMHO, starvation is not a business model, and is not required by the GPL ;-)

I’m sorry, I’ve never read the GNU License before. Now I know what you guys mean.

It just feels so new to be totally free :)
