Display a temporary index

How do I display a temporary index? Since we’re going to change our layout completely (rebrand ;)), I’d like to redirect the frontpage to a temporary static page (say index.html instead of index.php).

Is that possible?

i’d recommend using ruud’s excellent rvm_maintenance plugin for that type of thing. let’s you work on the site while visitors are only seeing a temporary static page.
