support open standards at w3
Nokia and Apple have privately pushed to give Ogg the noose treatment (and so far succeeded) in HTML5. This destroyed all hope of having free (as in freedom) media embedded in HTML5 in an interoperable way. link >

shrug. That blog post is only a very partial view of a very complex issue.
After sifting through 550+ posts on the WHATWG mailing list, the only sane voices I’ve heard are coming from Apple and Xiph.Org (aka, get the lawyers together in one room). From what I heard, some decent progress has been made at the meeting on video currently happening, organised by the W3C.
Where is that emoji for a solar powered submarine when you need it ?

I’ve temporarily removed the requirements on video codecs from the HTML5 spec, since the current text isn’t helping us come to a useful interoperable conclusion. When a codec is found that is mutually acceptable to all major parties I will update the spec to require that instead and then reply to all the pending feedback on video codecs. – Ian Hickson
I am not so sure I would so far as to describe things as “destroyed all hope of having free” at this point.
