Automatically categorizing table of links?

Hi. :) I’m looking to make a link exchange on my page for other people who produce music.

The goal:

To make a page of probably 100 to 250 links, sorted in alphabetical order. But to make it look nice I was thinking about splitting the links up into chunks of 10, three columns across. Since it’s a lot of links I was hoping to have a list at the top of the page to jump down to a particular alphabetic range. Each chunk of 10 links would be titled by the alphabetic range of the links in it. A-Z, Ca-Re, etc.

Example, with sets of 5:

A-Cl
1. Absolved
2. Badger Advance
3. Bunsen and his Burners
4. Caterpillar Wrangler
5. Clutch

Cr-T
1. Crustaceans Have Taken The Queen
2. Elk Master
3. Laser Bazooka
4. Linchpin
5. Toaster Molester

U-Um

1. Ultimate Cake Fight
2. Ulysses of Finland
3. Urchins on Benadryl
4. Uterus Computerus
5. Umbilical Chord

It would be dynamic…so that if I were to add, “Chaplin’s Nosering”, it would automatically go where “Clutch” currently is, “Clutch” would be moved to the next list and the Alphabet ranges would be updated for the lists and at the top of the page.

Is it possible? Impossible? Possible, but no one else cares? :)

If this isn’t possible, simply knowing if a linklist can be spread across 3 columns in a table would also be nice.

I just don’t want to have to sit around alphabetizing band names. Thanks!

Re: Automatically categorizing table of links?

The automatic updating of the alphabet ranges is definitely not possible. I don’t know if a plugin would be able to do that, but if so, such a plugin does not exist at the moment. What you could do, is create link categories: ‘A-C’, ‘D-T’, ‘U-Z’ or however you want to order them.

A linklist can be spread across multiple columns, using the offset and limit attributes. offset for linklists is not in 4.0.5 yet, but was already introduced in the development branche (see rev. 2718) so it will be in 4.0.6.
If you are going to use categories for alphabetical ordering though, you can create columns without the offset attribute.

Ah! Cool. I hope 4.0.6 comes out soon then. :)

Thanks for the info.
