testing a site

Hi,

I’ve got a website design I’m working on. I’m planning on using Textpattern for my CMS on the site. Before I go live with the site, I want to test the site. I thought about creating a subdomain for this purpose (i.e. test.mysite.com).

Do I only need Textpattern loaded on one directory (I’m planning on placing it on the root) to have it work with both the subdomain for testing AND the main domain? or should I load txp on both the main (root) directory AND the subdomain directory?

Also, once I’ve been using the subdomain to test with and the site is good to transfer over to the main directory, how is that done exactly with using txp?

Please excuse me if these are stupid questions as I’ve never worked with a database before, therefore I’m not sure about things like this. For that matter, I really don’t know if I’m even asking the questions properly.

I’m a designer by trade, not a developer (yeah right, like you can’t tell that already), so I’m just trying to get a grip on all this before I dive in.

Thank you in advance.

The very grateful zaodust.
