Delayed posting? It's weird...

A couple of weeks ago I posted an essay on my site. You could get to it by viewing it directly, but the excerpt didn’t show up in the category list or on my front page or anywhere else it was supposed to. If you didn’t know the exact url, you’d never know it existed. I mucked around for a while and then later… hours later or it may have been the next day, I was going to come here and post for help…

…but it mysteriously showed up. I hadn’t done anything it just took many hours (possibly a day) to appear on my site. So I didn’t post about it.

Well I just posted another essay and it’s not showing up. Part of me is thinking “well, wait until tomorrow and see if it appears” but then the other part of me said “there may be a simple explanation for this and the folks in the forum will know exactly what I’m talking about”. So on that chance, I’m posting.

Here is the direct url: http://opalcat.com/Creative_Writing/is-free-will-compatible-with-determinism
Here is one of the several places it should be showing up: http://opalcat.com/Creative_Writing/?c=Essays

I tried changing the date on it to yesterday but that had no effect.

It may be worth noting that I did recently upgrade to 4.0.5 but due to a weird bug that I couldn’t resolve I went back to 4.0.4.

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

My first check would be my time zone settings in preferences. If you are using the default settings for your article tag, its the only thing I can think of that would behave that way.

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

Right, but I tried setting the date for yesterday, and it still doesn’t show up. 24 hours is the maximum time zone difference possible.

Did you already try if clearing the browser cache made a difference?

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

Not specifically, but I opened it in another browser that would not have had that page cached, and when I went to other pages that should have listed it (such as the Essays category page) those would not have been in my cache either, as I hadn’t been to that page in weeks. I also did a forced reload of the page in both Firefox and IE.

When you go to www.opalcat.com where it says “Most Recently Added Content:” the first thing listed should be this essay (the Free Will one) but instead you see the previous one, the Adam and Eve one. And last time, it wouldn’t show the Adam and Eve one, it showed the chocolate cake recipe as “most recent”. Until later, when it magically appeared.

What is your setting for the send last modified header preference?

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

It’s set to “yes” (I don’t think I changed it from the default)

Try turning it off and see what happens.

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

No idea—that’s the default that it gave. I changed it to right now and it’s just showed up. That is so strange—why does it default to set itself at a later date? When I manually changed the date yesterday, I wasn’t thinking what the date actually was: it said 11/11 so I set it to 11/10 figuring “that’s yesterday” but in reality it was the 9th!! So writing a new article on the 9th defaulted to a date two days in the future… buh—wha??

I never touch the date setting when writing new articles (except when I’m posting something that’s old and I want to back-date it to whenever it was written, like when I was importing stuff from my old site).

So I guess the answer, for now, is that I should always check the date when I post something new.

(I wonder if my server’s time is off, maybe?)

Re: Delayed posting? It's weird...

Are your timezone settings (in Admin > Preferences) correct? You can check the server time in Diagnostics. If it is really ‘off’ (which is possible I think, a server that hosts some of my sites is half an hour off), you can correct it with your timezone settings.
