Creating chapters? This may relate to categories & sections

Hello!

I hope someone can help me out here..

My girlie & I got engaged 3 months back. So to help spread the word amongst friends & family, I created a website, which details the engagement, wedding plans etc, and will be including RSVP & wedding gift list at a future date.

It works perfectly, and can be checked out now at http://anthonyandhelena.co.uk

However, i was asked at the weekend whether this’ll be just for the wedding or continue past & be a general website for us in the future. I gave that idea alot of thought and thought it’d be great to have several Chapters. ie;

Chapter I – the wedding
Chapter II – the house
Chapter III – the family

each chapter will be added & filled out as and when it happens.

So i was just wondering how i would go about doing this?! The lazy part of me things “oh just create a new txp installation and rename it chapter2” but the other half of me wants to learn how to do this properly.

At the moment, our website is created using Sections. Each one named “about / Guestbook / Pictures” etc, and the categories aren’t used.

So can i build all this into one installation of txp? Can i have all the posts inter-linked, yet use different pages & css styles for different chapters? What would be the best way to do this?

Thanks for any help :D

First of all: congratulations :)

Second: if I were you I’d keep the sections: about, guestbook, pictures, and contact. Then create a section e.g. journal, and within that use categories for engagement, wedding, honeymoon, rsvp and whatever else will come up in your lives.

Or regarding the wedding you can use both category 1 and 2. Like this:
Category 1: wedding
Category 2: engagement, honeymoon or rsvp

Edit: and if you don’t think your wedding deserves being ‘just’ a category, then let it be a section ;)

Add a section called “chapter” to hold your evolving story. Use image and article categories with names like “i-the-wedding” and a title of “I – The Wedding”. You can then create a table of contents on the “chapter” main page (links for each chapter). I’m pretty sure there is a plugin that allows for urls like /section/category/title. If you can find one that allows that format, you can end up with urls like “/chapter/i-the-wedding/the-reception”, which I think would be really cool.

The “chapter” section would have a default css and it’s own page. To get a unique css for each chapter, you would need to use an “if_category” tag.

Nice ideas….

That’s what’s put me off using categories is the fact you can’t use it in the URL’s… Manfre, that’d be fantastic if i could have a url like chapter/i-the-wedding/the-reception

Els, thanks for the congrats :)

That would be gbp_permanent_links.

Els, perfect, thank you so much!

Manfre, Going on from what you were saying abuot creating a section called Chapter. Would it not be easier to create 3 sections (chapter1/2/3) and then assign their own page & CSS sheets, and then I’d no longer need the If_category tag.

Am i missing something?

The easiest solution would be the one the best matches what you are looking to accomplish with regards to urls, work flow to enter articles, site layout, etc.
