Clean URLs without ISAPI_rewrite
I took a look round the forums and FAQ and couldn’t see an answer to my question. We are a small web studio and right now I am evaluating various CMS/blogging tools to use as our main CMS that we roll out to clients for each project. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to Wrodpress or Textpattern and playing around with TXP over the last few days has really given me a good impression, however whatever solution I choose needs to have clean URLs as we do a lot of SEO work. Now I setup TXP on my linux hosting account and it works like a dream, however many of our clients are on IIS hosting. Now i know that ideally TXP should run on apache and that mod_rewrite does all the work, however some clients have IIS hosting and simply put we’re not going to be able to change that. Not only that but most have shared hosting which means no ISAPI_rewrite modules. I emailled a couple of hosts today and most of the shared hosts don’t have any sort of rewriting module installed.
Basically I am wondering if there is a way of generating clean URLs on IIS without using ISAPI_rewrite, the same thing is done in wordpress using some PHP on a 404 page. Here you can see the method i have tested:

Is something like this possible on TXP? I appreciate it might not be out there, and i’m willing to put some development time in, but in theory is it possible to use the custom 404 page in this way or is that strictly a WP thing?

Re: Clean URLs without ISAPI_rewrite
I experimented with using 404-handler for clean urls:

You might give it a try, it only requires a few minor steps, but it’s not “supported” because we’ve received relatively little feedback, and the handling of 404s with scripts varies quite a bit with different webservers.
