Academic bilingual site

Ludwig von Mises Institute – Romania

A variation on Vadimir Agafonkin’s “Serene” template. Free website for a non-profit private academic organization. Holds a lot of big texts: mostly books and articles in romanian.

My first txp attempt, built as I learned txp. Many things could and can be done better, I know…

I tried to keep the plug-ins at a minimum and so the site only uses: ako_nav, rss_admin_db_manager, rss_article_edit, wet_replace, zem_contact_lang, zem_contact_reborn, zem_redirect.

Re: Academic bilingual site

looks fine to me. How did you do the bilingual thing? You’re not using the Multi-Lingual Publishing Pack, are you?

I was not aware of the MLP at the time I began the site and then it was too late to change.

In my case I have parallel english & romanian language sections, ex.: “books”/“cuprins”. There are pairs of ro & en articles, each in its corresponding section and each has a “ro-en” custom field containing their inversed id’s.

Then I used wet’s (one more reason to thank him!) artifice to the effect of the impossible ideal:

<txp:article_custom id="<txp:custom_field name="ro-en" />" form="readlink" />

“readlink” form has a conditional that discerns between english and romanian sections and puts ‘english’ or ‘romanian’ accordingly so as to direct the reader to the other language version.

That’s it. Find the adapted artifice below:

<txp:if_custom_field name="ro-en">
<txp:php>
$a = custom_field (array ('name' => 'ro-en'));
echo article_custom (array(
    'id' => $a,
    'form' => 'readlink'
));
</txp:php>
</txp:if_custom_field>

If anybody thinks I should edit this post and put most of it in the “How to’s and Examples”… section, please let me know.

Yours is an elegantly simple solution to a seemingly difficult problem.

I second the request for the wiki explanation. Please add a message here when you’ve written your Wiki entry.
