host moved database - updated config but can't edit or write

Hello, without warning a friend’s host moved the location of their mysql database. Fortunately, the site continued to work. Unfortunately, we can no longer add or update articles, forms, or preferences. Originally, we pointed to the DB with an IP address instead of localhost in config.php. I guess that address forwarded properly when they moved the DB.

I’ve updated config.php with the new subdomain.domain.net that they provided. The site is still live and working, but we still can’t write to the database. Am I missing something in textpattern or is this problem on the host’s end?

We pass diagnostics and show MySQL: 4.1.20-standard.

We have the rss_admin_db_manager plugin installed. With config.php updatd, it still doesn’t seem like I can do a proper backup. A new one is 120.45 KB unlike the 4-5mb backup from a month ago. I don’t know enough to run any mysql tests from here. Maybe you can suggest something.

Are the user and pass in config.php used for both the frontend and backend? If our problem was here, could the site still run?

thanks for any and all advice. long live txp!

No, it’s the database user and password. If you haven’t resolved this yet, try reinstalling TXP:

  1. Export your database
  2. Do a clean install of TXP
  3. Import database

What does that mean? Do you get errors on save? Does nothing happen?

You should verify with your host that your db connection details are correct.

Re: host moved database - updated config but can't edit or write

As I suspected, the trouble was not with TXP or the configuration. After a successful install, I’ve never found TXP to be anything but rock solid.

The host’s tech support said to me, “I don’t think it’s a problem with mysql. I’ve never seen trouble with write but not read access for only a single user on shared hosting. This would be the first time.”

But what would life be like if there were never any first times?
