At first glance, it seems nice yup.
Of course there’s still the damn B
and I
button (when will coder grow up and let go of the old tag soup web…) but it’s easily fixable.
However, note that’s nothing new. The toolbar can be done with one of Mary’s plugin, and the live preview was also possible with another plugin.

The live preview won’t do you much good, since it is based upon a very old version of Textile.

The keyword is cross browser!
Based on my experience, none of the solutions currently available to the txp users is cross browser…
This Textile Helper even works on my beloved Safari :-)

hak_textile_tags works just fine in Safari for me, but it’s for comments only. Couldn’t one of the live preview plugins accomplish the live preview portion on it’s own?
If you want quicktags in the admin look at upm_quicktags the textile implementation is partial but I can finish it if there is demand (I never heard of anyone actually using it)
I’ve got to say I don’t think this works nearly as nicely as quicktags as it forces the user to enter the text select it and the format it. Plus 85kb!!!

The helper would also need some work too. It does not support nested lists for example.

85k for the documented and unprocessed prototype library – using a javascript packer it’s under 30kb (probably even more tweakable).
For a textile beginner (or someone who uses textile just once in a while like probably most customers) it would be a valuable addition in the admin interface. I have to admit, for the textile experts like the people who use this forum it’s basically useless.
And yes, quicktags handling is more elegant – but the author of Conrol.Textarea might be grateful for a hint and implement it as well.

I still don’t understand what this does that upm_quicktags doesn’t. Is it just the live preview? If we are thinking of using this for the write tab where would the preview be?
I prototyped this with quicktags a few years back before I wrote hak_textile-tags. It doesn’t live preview but that would be trivial to implment. Some of the code is also implemented as the textile add on to upm_quicktags. Seems to work fine in Safari for me.
