linking to artcles by month

i apologize if this has already been addressed, as i haven’t been able to find the specific post.

this is my current default and archive page (all in one).

when a user clicks on the individual links they see a single article. i want to have the month / year titles in the archive column as links, which (when clicked on) take the user to all the articles posted in that month.

with all the plugins available i am a little confused as to how to implement what i want to do, which is basicly what is seen here on this site.

if u scroll down about half way a little you can see (on the right under a “history” title) that there is an archive of artcles listed by month, which when clicked on take the user to all articles in the month.
i can’t see how to do this via the instuctions listed in the FAQ re: how to create an archive list.

is it possible to do this without a plugin? or is one necessary? if so, can anyone point me to which ones might be best.
