Displaying non-English characters in posts

I apologize if this question has been answered, but I cannot seem to find an answer.

My posts are mainly in English, but I use non-English letters for names, places, etc. For example, I use š ū, etc. Once I save my posts those letters turn into question marks. What’s the solution? I use the latest TXP release.

Once again, sorry if this has been answered…

Thanks.

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

Which browser do you use?
Can you provide an example page that shows the question marks?
Do you copy/paste these characters from a different document (Word?) or do you enter them yourself in TXP?

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

It’s not in a browser. It’s in the Textpattern itself. For example, I write this “Ojārs Kalniņš runs a mile” Once I hit save the entry even as a draft, the non-English characters inside the entry window turn from Ojārs Kalniņš to Oj?ars Kalni?š.

I enter them myself in TXP

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

I suspect this is the problem:

19 Tables: textpattern is latin1, txp_category is latin1, txp_css is latin1, txp_discuss is latin1, txp_discuss_ipban is latin1, txp_discuss_nonce is latin1, txp_file is latin1, txp_form is latin1, txp_image is latin1, txp_lang is latin1, txp_link is latin1, txp_log is latin1, txp_log_mention is latin1, txp_page is latin1, txp_plugin is latin1, txp_prefs is latin1, txp_priv is latin1, txp_section is latin1, txp_users is latin1

Did you recently install textpattern on this server?
Did you restore a backup made on a different server?

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

I moved the server about four months ago.

How do I fix it?

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

I didn’t have a backup. It was in December. I think I just imported TXP entries and exported them back onto a new installation.

Re: Displaying non-English characters in posts

If you already had many articles on the old server and haven’t added any new articles (or not many) since the server move, a quick fix may be to add this line (instead of $txpcfg['dbcharset'] = 'utf8', if it exists) in your textpattern/config.php file:
$txpcfg['dbcharset'] = 'latin1';

But make sure you create a backup before doing this.
See this topic for more information. You’re not the first one to run into this problem.
