List of downloadable files with thumbnail previews?

I want to display a bunch of thumbnails and each thumbnail needs a link underneath it to link to a downloadable file. I can do this manually with FTP and hard coding but is there a better way in TXP?

Textpattern doesn’t have that kind of capability for files, only images. You could use the various Txp tags to make the hard-coding simpler, but it would still be a manual process. The other alternative is using articles (one for each file), files and images (article images) in tandem.
