Plugins forum suggestion

I would recommend to clean up and disable/limit if possible the ‘new topics’ function in the plugins forum.

The suggestion is to allow the new topic functionality ONLY to the plugin developers. There are far too many people posting their problems with plugins outside of the relevant plugin threads. This clatters the forum and also makes it more difficult to find any solutions to particular plugin problems as some of them are discussed in topics which are by now buried.

Maybe there should be another user type in this forum which could be called “plugin developer”, or similar and they should be the only ones allowed to create new topics in the plugins forum.

There could be a sticky topic for new developers to post so as for those rights to be granted to them…

I hope I make sense. Only had a couple of hours sleep last night so I’m quite out of it…

Re: Plugins forum suggestion

That would make a sensible follow up on this thread :)
I agree.

Re: Plugins forum suggestion

Indeed.

Part of the problem will be fixed when I’ve got us switched to forum software that has split/merge thread capability (so that, when a user creates a new thread, we can simply move his post to the plugin thread).

Now to do this, I need to make a new forum group and add all the plugin devs to it. Can someone help me out by posting links to plugin developers’ profiles?

Here are some from the plugin forum’s first page

Re: Plugins forum suggestion

Is it okay to have a new plugin thread for a new plugin version?
I’m currently maintaining zem_contact_reborn and one of the questions that was asked most often in the first thread for that plugin was to create a new thread for each version to avoid getting threads that were too long. People didn’t want to read the entire thread mainly because most of the older posts dealt with feature requests or problems that existed in older versions, so those posts were no longer relevant to the current plugin version.

Re: Plugins forum suggestion

I think if you do that the old version’s thread should be closed.

rloaderro
chriloi
morgant
santheo
cbeyls

Re: Plugins forum suggestion

What I would do is have a forum at the Textpattern Resources specifically for plugin support, the same can be applied to Textgarden. Instead of having comments under each plugin or template article, it would link to the specific forum thread. The forum(s) can be setup to only allow plugin or template authors to create new threads, user would only be able to respond.

This forum would just be for Textpattern core support, much tidier in my opinion.

Agreed.

I would also consider strongly suggesting/enforcing some guidelines about thread’s subject syntax, and first post.

Another Textpattern website? Over my dead, smoking, curling, body…

One website to rule them all is the goal, not the other way around.

Process : a developper open a plugin page on the TextRessources website. This will automatically create a thread on the TXP Plugin’s forum. The forum by itself is otherwise closed to new thread. No need for another website, clean, simple.

yes. I also think that the forum is where we all start with anyway. I believe that it is here where all the cooking and problem solving occurs. It is txp’s melting pot.

This would be cool if it could be done… can it?

My suggestion of the sticky topic where new devs can post their first post of their new plugin and existing devs have rights over new posts in the plugin forum is already within the capabilities of this forum software and its community…

I’ll be leaving for a few days tomorrow and i will not be able to contribute until i come back next week. I’m flat out today and if I get some time (no promises) I’ll post some more devs here.
