Newbie Questions

Hi there, I’m new to TextPattern and just had some general questions about how it can be used. I’ve successfully installed TextPattern on my server and I have it all working fine. However I can’t seem to figure out how to get it to do what I want it too.

Firstly, I’ve seen examples of TextPattern being used to publish news storys and feed text boxes in Flash. An example of this is www.sugababes.com – do any of you know a tutorial or a procedure of how I can figure out how to do this?

Secondly, I’ve like TextPattern to feed articles into my HTML pages on a site that has already been designed, kind of just replacing the current news feed. I presume this would be done via PHP? Again can any of you please point me in the right direction for this? Some of the jargon and terms has really confused me.

Hope you can help,

Thanks.

Re: Newbie Questions

FAQ: I’ve installed Textpattern. Now what?

I’ve like TextPattern to feed articles into my HTML pages…

Textpattern really isn’t designed to work in that manner. Someone could probably point you to a way to hack it, but understand that it’s not supported and really is messy.

Sugababes isn’t using Textpattern. But, in order to have Flash pull content from Textpattern, you’d need a plugin (I don’t believe one exists).

Re: Newbie Questions

Thanks for the reply Mary.

I’ve realised TextPattern isn’t really ideal to feed HTML articles. I’m now doing a tutorial on how I can use TextPattern properly and creating my site inside it instead.

Interestingly enough the Sugababes Flash site is fed using Textpattern. Here is the news link which feeds the Flash news in the site : http://www.sugababes.com/site/news – I’d be interested to know how they managed this.

Re: Newbie Questions

Ah. So they have Textpattern installed here(http://www.sugababes.com/site), rather than here (http://www.sugababes.com/).

One possibility is that they are pulling the content from their RSS/Atom feed into their Flash movie.

Re: Newbie Questions

Hello,

I am interested in using Textpattern. However I would lke to also purchase the official manual.
Currently I live in Australia and work at www.kikaudio.net as a sound editor.
Can I purchase then manual anywhere in Australia?
Or can I download the PDF from somewhere.
Sorry for the N00bie question.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Newbie Questions

As far as I know there is no “official manual” except a pdf mary has made, the textbook site and the eagerly awaited textpattern solutions book which is already available at amazon for pre-ordering

Re: Newbie Questions

I haven’t used Flash since 2003 but you can load external txt and simple html files. So basically in TXP you have to make a very simple page containing only headers and use only <a>, <h1>, <p> etc in in list forms. No CSS or anything. Some Flash versions ago they started supporting external XML (and unicode) too.

Google terms like “loading external html files in flash mx” and “load external html in flash”.

So:
  • very plain textpattern page (only <txp:article /> in <body>) assigned to a section
  • point Flash’s import/load function to that TXP section and display the output in a text field
  • enjoy content

The TXP part is simpler than the Flash part.

Re: Newbie Questions

(The book won’t be the “official” manual either, though helpful. :))
