Newbie: Archive Layout

I am very new to this software, so please bare with me :)

I am looking to have a static left sided menu to show archives, topics, etc for my blog. While having the right side of the page change when the user clicks on an older archive, etc.

Is there a template or something I need to install? Or is this a bigger task?

Maybe you could start with installing an existing template and adept it to your needs. Advantage is that you can see which tags should be used and how. Starting from scratch and building your site from the default install however is also a very good way to learn about Textpattern, and there is always this forum :)
