Display part of article on frontpage?

Hello,

I’d like to show just a part of my articles on frontpage and have the text linked to the complete article. For instance, my front page would display:
“Today I did the laundry and other nice things..” which would link to the whole story, although it shouldn’t show comments yet. Comment invite should be on for the part and whole story. I know that excerpt does this for RSS feeds, but this is more of a cosmetic concern.
I tried searching forum database and found out that somebody is using plugin called ‘beginning’ to do something like this, however it didn’t work for me. So if somebody knows a convenient way to do this with or without plugin I’d appreciate help :)
