Windows install paths with USB drives

Over the last few days I’ve been playing with running XAMPP off a USB drive. There are various reasons you’d want to have a USB drive at the ready with a full AMP stack, but I’ll not get into it here.

Everything is working great on the USB drive, a bit slower than a disk but the next generation of dual channel memory drives should bridge the speed gap.

A full XAMPP install on my PNY 1GB stick:
XAMPP 1.5.5: 311MB FAT, with Perl addon: 579MB FAT

Once I had everything installed and running fine on my laptop, I took the USB drive to my daughter’s laptop. This is where I encountered an issue with Textpattern since the install puts a drive letter in front of the paths.

Full server path to Textpattern – F:\xampp\htdocs\textpattern\textpattern
Temporary directory path – F:\xampp\htdocs\textpattern\textpattern\tmp
File directory path – F:\xampp\htdocs\textpattern\files

On my laptop it’s F:, on my daughter’s laptop the USB drive is E:, so Textpattern bombed out.

Textpattern works just fine without the drive letter, do we really need it?

Re: Windows install paths with USB drives

Textpattern works just fine without the drive letter…

How will it know what drive to look at/use for file and image uploads?

Re: Windows install paths with USB drives

I took the drive letter out of config and the admin area, I’m having no problems with either image or file uploads.

Also, in the installation process, I take out the drive letter from the path and yet it makes it’s way into the admin, strange.
